Morning!
This weekend has consisted of a lot of relaxing! And also a lot of failed eats!
Yesterday the bf and I were supposed to do brunch. But he had to work all morning and we didn’t get out of the house until 1:30. So we decided to go to ‘wichcraft, a sandwich and smoothie place, for a very late 2pm brunch (aka lunch)
. So it wasn’t a total loss, I really like it there.
Ever since reading this post from Smitten Kitchen, every time I’ve been to ‘wichcraft, I always get the chopped chickpea sandwich, which is chopped chickpeas, roasted red peppers, black olives, lemon and parsley on country bread (but I get it on multigrain).
YUM!
The bf got a melty grilled cheese type sandwich. It was grilled mozzarella & fontina cheeses with tomato-olive preserves on country bread.
We did a bit of shopping, and then, I’m not gunna lie… we spent the rest of the day relaxxxxxing
Sometimes you just need a day of nothing.
Then we were meeting the bf’s sister (who is visiting) and her friend Ashley for dinner.
We had plans on going to a cute little Thai place called The Elephant.
BUT when we got there, it was closed for an event.
So we walked around in hopes of finding somewhere else. But everywhere we looked was PACKED!
It was cold. We were all starving. We finally found a decent looking place that didn’t look too full called Cafe Orlin. It served middle eastern type food.
Unfortunately we had to sit outside in the cold while waiting for a table inside. But we finally got in.
The bf ordered a calamari/octopus appetizer with lentils which I stole some of. It was actually quite good.
And Ashley ordered a carrot and ginger soup which was also tasty.
We were off to a good start! …But then the mains came.
Ashley got the falafel… which looked good… but apparently tasted not so good. FAIL 1.
Bf got a chicken and lime dish served on cracked wheat. I think this was the “safest choice”. He didn’t mind it. But he was not impressed. FAIL 2.
Bf’s sister got a sesame crusted salmon dish. It looked great! But she tried one bite and could literally not have another one. FAIL 3!
And I got the tabouli plate. It was NOT what I was expecting.
I would say that tabouli normally has parsley, bulgur, mint, tomatoes, and onions. This tabouli was JUST parsley. Literally a plate of parsley. With 2 sliced grape tomatoes and 2 olives on the side. And a white pita. Boo! And if you can’t tell from the picture, the tabouli is on an appetizer sized plate. And this meal was NOT listed as an appetizer.
I was not happy. I had some of my appetizer plate of parsley and begrudgingly had some of the pita because I was hungry. GR! FAIL 4!
Not quite a filling dinner. The bf and I were supposed to go to see a movie after but we missed it because it took us so long to find a place to eat. Another fail!
But on our way home we passed by the famous Yonah Schimmel’s Knishes and I decided to grab one as I was left hungry from “dinner”.
What is a Knish you ask? Well it’s a type of dumpling, with a filling (usually Potatoes, sometimes with other veggies OR Cheese, sometimes with fruit), covered with a very thin layer of flaky dough. It’s DELICIOUS!
So we popped into Yonah’s and I got myself a sweet potato knish to take home
It was HUGE! I cut it in half because it was so big. But, it was so delicious, I ended up going back for the other half. Yummy! I love knishes. I am most definitely going to visit Yonah’s again.
So… all in all, I guess it worked out. Not a very “balanced” dinner. But, what can ya do. Sometimes you have to make exceptions!
I think it’s an oatmeal morning
… and a study day
Have a great Sunday!
