Hi! Welcome to Just Flourishing! My name is Janna and I love cooking, eating and learning about healthy food. I also love spreading my knowledge, cooking for my friends and family and sharing the new healthy recipes and information I discover. This is probably why I’ve decided to become a Registered Dietitian!
I’m from Winnipeg, Canada (you may have heard of it because of its reputation for chilly temperatures
) and I just came back home from living in New York City for a year. There, I took some pre-requisite science courses in order to get accepted into a Masters program in Nutrition (and had some amazing times in The City along the way) and now I’m in the midst of my grad school applications!!!
*If you have any questions about changing careers to become a Nutritionist/RD don’t hesitate to email me! I know I was slightly confused about the process when I first started!*
SOME FUN FACTS ABOUT ME:
- I was a ballet dancer for many years as well as a competitive rhythmic gymnast.
- At 17 I tore my right ACL during one of my dance practices and had to have reconstructive surgery!
- Even with a bum knee, I decided to take up running and have so far run two races – an 8k and a 10k. I hope to run many more in the future!
- I love food! I love cooking it and, of course, I love eating it! I do believe that food is our fuel, and I do treat it as such; but I also think it is so much more than that. I love almost all cuisines and I love trying new things!
Do not know what I’m eating there! – Spice Market Summer ‘09
- I DO NOT by any means eat perfectly and am a big believer in “Almost Everything in Moderation.” I put the “Almost” in there because there are certain things (such as artificial sweeteners, HFCS and trans fats) that have NO place in our diet.
- I am a pretty active individual; I run, do yoga, spin, dance and love trying out new exercise classes at the gym. I also love outdoor activities and wish I got a chance to do them more often!

Just Flourishing is a fun, informal and hopefully informational place for me to write about the things I am passionate about. I hope that by sharing what I do to live a healthy lifestyle, that I can inspire you to do the same.

Hi Janna! I just found your blog through Healthy Chow. So glad I did! I have just started back to school (at 31!!) to be an RD. I have a background in psychology too, but even with a masters degree, I am starting from scratch with those prerequisites! That psychology background and years of working as a counselor doesn’t teach a whole lot of hard science. I will be looking forward to following you journey!

Thanks for stopping by! I’m right there with you doing the hard science! It’s a long road, but it will be worth it in the end

Hey Janna! Thanks for the comment on my blog! Your blog is the cutest thing I’ve ever seen!! So jealous of the layout and the beautiful header. I used to do cartwheels all around my house when I was little….and when I was too grown up to do so

Hi! Always nice to see a fellow Canuck in blog-land! I’ve been toying with the idea of an RD too – we actually have similar backgrounds, I also have a BA in Psych. Do you plan to do your Master’s in Canada or in the US?

Hey Ashley! Thanks so much visiting the blog.
Agreed. There are too few of us Canadian’s here in blog-land!
That’s awesome you’re thinking about becoming an RD! I am hoping to do my Master’s in the US, specifically in NYC (where the BF is
), but I’ll have to wait and see where I get accepted!

Hey Janna! Thanks for reading my blog! I love yours too, I will def be reading it. We will have to get together sometime since you live in New York! I know this Thursday some bloggers are going to Exhale Gansevoort to take a Core Fusion class if you would want to come. I still haven’t signed up yet but I am planning on going.

Hey there! I noticed we are pretty similar. I used to be a ballet dancer and always loved nutrition/health. I’m interested in going back to school to become a Nutritionist. I’ve been looking into Hunter’s program. Where are you going to school?? I would need to take some more science classes to get into the master’s program also…
Thanks!

Hi Lauren! So glad you found your way over here
I think you’re off to a great start! Having an undergraduate degree in public health education will make for an easy transition into a masters in nutrition! My only tips would be to make sure you get those core sciences in during your undergrad as you need them for a Masters in Nutrition in most cases. Another tip is to try and find relevant volunteer experience in the field. For example, I’m a volunteer with City Harvest’s Nutrition Education Program. Hope that helps. Good luck!
